Overview

Chinese Evergreen: Colorful Low-Light Champion

Aglaonema are some of the most beautifully patterned houseplants. Leaves splashed in silver, pink, red, and cream bring vibrant color where most colorful plants struggle.

Perfect for Beginners

Cultivated in Asia for centuries, these plants tolerate low light, irregular watering, and dry air far better than most tropicals.

Stunning Varieties

  • Silver Bay: Silver-green with dark green edges
  • Red Siam: Bright red and pink
  • Maria: Dark green with silver markings
  • Pink Dalmatian: Green with pink speckles

In Chinese tradition, Aglaonema is associated with good fortune, and it is often given as a gift to new businesses.

Watering

Water when top 1-2 inches dry. Prefers consistent moderate moisture but forgives forgetfulness. In winter, let soil dry more between waterings. Use room-temperature water — they dislike cold water on roots.

Light

Excels in low to medium indirect light. Darker varieties handle low light best. Pink/red varieties need medium indirect light for vibrant color. Avoid direct sun which bleaches and burns leaves.

Soil

Standard well-draining potting mix with added perlite. Not fussy about soil as long as it does not stay waterlogged.

Fertilizing

Feed every 6-8 weeks in spring/summer with balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Light feeders. Stop in fall/winter.

Propagation

Divide root clumps during repotting, or take stem cuttings with a few leaves and place in water or moist soil. Roots appear in 3-4 weeks. Division is quickest.

Repotting

Every 2-3 years in spring. Slow growers that tolerate being slightly root-bound. Move up one pot size only.

Common problems

Yellow leaves: Overwatering or cold drafts.
Brown crispy edges: Low humidity or fertilizer buildup.
Leggy growth: Insufficient light.
Drooping: Usually thirsty — perks up within hours after watering.

Pro tips

Color guide: Darker varieties = less light needed. Pink/red = more light for best color.
Cold sensitivity: Below 55°F causes serious damage.
"Air cleaner" label: Often listed among air-purifying plants, though at normal room scale the effect on indoor air is negligible.
