Pest guide

Pick the signs you see on your plant to identify common houseplant pests and how to treat them.

What are you seeing?

Pick one or more signs. Only matching pests and problems are shown, best matches first.

Holes are usually caused by chewing pests (caterpillars, slugs or snails), which mostly affect plants kept outdoors or summered outside. Indoors, holes with brown or yellow edges are often dead tissue from leaf-spot disease dropping out rather than insect damage.

Pests & problems

How it works

What the tool does

  1. The guide covers 11 common problems: 9 pests, such as spider mites, mealybugs, fungus gnats, thrips and scale, and 2 diseases, root rot and leaf spot.

  2. Pick the signs you see, such as fine webs, sticky residue or silver streaks. Matching entries are shown with the best matches first; yellowing leaves counts for less because many problems cause it.

  3. Each entry lists the signs to look for, the damage it does, treatment steps and how to prevent it coming back.

FAQ

Good to know

Yes. The treatment steps in this guide start by moving the affected plant away from your other plants, so the pest has less chance to spread.
Root rot and leaf spot are diseases rather than insects and are marked with a leaf icon. Several signs, such as yellowing and wilting, are shared, so check leaf undersides, stems and roots before you treat.
