Houseplant pests

Fine webbing and speckled leaves (spider mites), white cottony clumps (mealybugs), sticky leaves or clusters of tiny insects are the usual signs of houseplant pests.

What to do

  1. 1 Move the plant away from your others and check leaf undersides, stems and leaf joints.
  2. 2 Rinse or wipe off what you can with a spray of water or a damp cloth.
  3. 3 Treat with insecticidal soap or a horticultural or neem oil spray, covering the undersides of the leaves. Follow the label and repeat as directed.
  4. 4 Use yellow sticky traps to keep an eye on flying pests such as whiteflies and fungus gnats.
