Light finder

Answer a few quick questions about your window and we'll estimate the light level you have, plus which plants suit it.

Step of 4

Which direction does your window face?

Not sure? Check a compass app on your phone while facing the window.

Your hemisphere

How big is the window?

Larger windows let in more light. Estimate the width.

Is there anything blocking the light?

Select all that apply. Obstructions reduce the light reaching your plant.

How far is your plant from the window?

Light drops off quickly as you move away from the window.

Tips for your spot

Want more light?

A grow light can widen your plant options in a dim spot. A full-spectrum LED grow light can stand in for some of the missing daylight, even in darker rooms.

Check the maker's guidance on how far to place it from the plant and how many hours to run it.

How it works

What the tool does

  1. You pick the direction your window faces (with a Northern / Southern Hemisphere switch), its size, anything in the way such as trees, buildings, sheer curtains or blinds, and how far the plant sits from the glass.

  2. Each answer adds to or takes away from a starting score for the window direction. The total puts the spot in one of four bands: direct sun, bright indirect, medium or low.

  3. It then lists plants from our plant profiles whose light needs fit that band, ideal fits first and plants that only tolerate it after them, and suggests a grow light when the spot is very dim or more than 6 feet from the window.

FAQ

Good to know

No. It doesn't use your camera or a light sensor. It estimates a light level from your answers about the window and where the plant stands, so treat the result as a starting point and watch how the plant responds.
The window that faces the equator gets the most sun: south-facing in the Northern Hemisphere, north-facing in the Southern Hemisphere. The switch makes sure that window is scored as the brightest.
Only plants that have a care profile on Plant Care Club. Each plant's listed light needs are compared with the estimated light level, and every suggestion links to its profile.
