About zone

Why this matters for indoor plants

USDA zones mainly apply to outdoor gardening, but knowing your zone helps with indoor plant care too:

Recommended indoor plants for your zone

Each zip code is assigned a single zone, but conditions can vary within a zip code area (elevation, urban heat, local microclimates). For a precise location, use the official USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.

How it works

What the tool does

  1. Enter a 5-digit US ZIP code.

  2. The tool looks the code up in the 2023 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map ZIP-code data (PRISM Climate Group, Oregon State University) and shows its zone, such as 7a, with that zone's temperature range in °F and °C.

  3. It then explains what the zone means and adds indoor care tips and a few houseplant suggestions for that climate.

FAQ

Good to know

The USDA map is based on the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature, shown as 10°F zones split into 5°F half zones (“a” is the colder half, “b” the warmer). Gardeners use it to judge which perennial plants are likely to thrive at a location.
Not much while they stay indoors. It matters when you move houseplants outside for the summer or grow plants on a patio or balcony, because it tells you how cold your winters get.
The finder covers the 50 states and Puerto Rico. Other US territories and APO/FPO military ZIP codes are not in the data set; for those, use the official USDA map.
